RUSSLYNN ALI SUMMER FELLOWSHIP  The Education Trust—West (ETW) seeks a 3rd cohort of Russlynn Ali Summer Fellows for 2020. The goal of the Fellowship is to support people of color entering policy and advocacy leadership by laying the foundation for current and future policymakers, researchers, advocates, and promising African American, Latinx, Asian American, Pacific Islander and Indigenous people to become lifelong leaders within California’s P-16 education ecosystem. From June through August, Fellows will gain exposure to the issues, policies, and politics of the current California landscape through a cohort experience and will work on a project with an ETW team to advance educational equity and racial justice issues. All Fellows must have a passion for improving the educational experiences and outcomes for students of color and low-income students, and the belief that these students could be much more successful if institutions better served them.FAST FACTS ESTABLISHED: 2001EMPLOYEES: 20+MISSION: The Education Trust–West (ETW) works for the educational justice and the high academic achievement of all students at all levels, pre-K through college. We expose opportunity and achievement gaps that separate students of color, English learners, and low-income students from their peers, and we identify and advocate for the strategies that will forever close those gaps. We work alongside schools, districts, college campuses, and higher education institutions to understand and evaluate the effectiveness of reform strategies intended to reduce and eliminate achievement and opportunity gaps. We use lessons learned in these efforts, together with unflinching data analyses, to drive a state and national conversation about how our P-16 education system can better serve all students. ETW’s tools and services help schools and districts transform their policies, practices, and systems to create equitable access to rigorous and relevant coursework while providing the learning environment and supports students need to thrive.Drawing upon our 15+ years of Educational Equity Audits (EEA)—a two-phase research and facilitation process to help districts identify the systemic barriers that limit students’ success and develop action plans for change—our School District Engagement Fellow will help to answer 2 key questions:What are the common recommendations, strategies for success, and challenges that districts face in the process of making systemic changes to advance equity? What success stories exist and what makes them successful? YOUR LEGACY  A robust qualitative analysis of our district work to inform our future work with districts and county offices of education.YOUR QUALIFICATIONS
  • Understanding of the K-12 educational landscape and terminology
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Experience in, or desire to enhance experience in qualitative research
  • Bonus points if you have experience in a school setting
