Director of Finance
Position OverviewThe Director of Finance is a key member of the Summit Public Schools (SPS) Finance team and is responsible for accounting, fiscal compliance, reporting, audit for all of the Summit Washington Schools. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this position provides leadership and expertise for the Finance team in the areas of transactional accounting, budgets and reporting and ensures fiscal compliance with state and local authorities, month end close and audit preparation pertaining to Summit’s Washington schools. In addition to these immediate topics, the position will be responsible in providing as needed support to the finance team, determining coding structures to ensure proper reporting to department and budget leads, the adherence to internal controls, segregation of duties, and SPS policies and assist with the SPS audit process. What You’ll Do: Accounting and Finance ManagementManage and supervise accounting personnel assigned to Washington schools - includes coaching and ensuring the timely and accurate completion of tasks. Prepare monthly and quarterly closings and supporting schedules. Be responsible for Washington Financial Audit (independent and State Auditors) and supports the Controller with Summit’s consolidated financial audit. Oversee the activities of the WA disbursement department, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, employee expense reports, and core payroll processing. Oversee the activities of the WA accounts receivable to ensure the accurate and timely management of all accounts receivable components from local, state, and federal sources. Prepare receivable schedules as required. Post revenue and expense accruals for full fiscal years; reconcile accruals at the end of year with actuals and ensure the proper amounts are on all financial statements Respond to client/customer inquiries regarding posted items and correct if required. Responsible for complying with all applicable Revised Code of Washington (RCW) laws while performing finance related tasks. ReportingPrepare financial statements to all stakeholders, including school leaders, philanthropy partners, board, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OPSI), the Washington Charter Commission or others as required. Prepare monthly and quarterly reporting to schools, departments, budget leads, and authorizers. Includes budget to actual reporting end of year forecasts, board reporting, interim reports, and ad-hoc financial reporting as requested. Attend Washington Finance Committee and Board meetings to present financial report summaries, receive feedback and action items for Board finance activities. Act as liaison with Washington State Auditor’s Office on financial issues. Interfaces with other regulatory organizations as required. Treasury ManagementAssist in monitoring of cash on hand and recommend appropriate transactions to comply with fiduciary policies. Ensure that sufficient funds are available to meet ongoing operational needs. Complete monthly bank reconciliations by the 10th of each month, including making journal entries for credit card transactions, bank account transfers, and online donations. Budgeting & AnalysisPrepare the budgets related to Washington Schools and other Washington based financial operations based on inputs and worksheets from a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including ensuring compliance with all applicable financial covenants. Collaborate with other department team leads on budget inputs for school budgets. Forecast end of year budget results, balance sheets and cash flow statements for use by other members of the finance team.Analyzes financial results and prepares recommendations for cost savings based on the analysis Other financial responsibilities as assigned. Professional DevelopmentMaintain, nurture and develop external partnerships to further Charter School success in the state of Washington. What You Need: Bachelor's degree required. A master’s degree is preferred. At least 4 years experience in accounting/finance. Non-profit or charter school finance experience is a plus. Experience with audit standards (GAAP, FASB, GASB, Federal A133 audits). Experience and fluency with accounting software & other business management programspreferred. Intermediate skills in Excel and Google Sheets. Meet health clearance, and pass the reference, background/criminal checks, per education code. Ability to travel occasionally to the Seattle/Tacoma metro area in Washington state, on a limited basis Who You Are: You’re passionate about accounting.
