Position: Instructional Coach (Upper Grade: 3-5)
Reports to: Director of Curriculum + Instruction
Location: San Francisco, CA

The New School of San Francisco opened its doors in August of 2015 with 80 kindergarten and first grade students from communities across San Francisco. We are a public charter school currently serving students in grades K-3, expanding to add a new grade each year eventually serving students K-12. We believe in a “hands-on minds-on” approach to learning that harnesses each student’s curiosity and encourages learners to construct their own meaning and knowledge through hands-on experiences. With an extended school day, there is explicit time for community building, play, exploration, arts and Spanish instruction. The model is diverse by design, meaning we not only draw students from all neighborhoods in the city, but we practice equity in all that we do – ensuring every child is able to access and receive an individualized education that builds off their unique strengths, skills and passions. With a thirteen-year commitment to kids and families, our approach will foster a deep love of learning in students and prepare them with the problem-solving and critical-thinking skills necessary to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

The Upper Instructional Coach is responsible for supporting the development and evolution of teachers in grade 3-5 and the curriculum and instruction they provide. Their overall impact should be to increase capacity, focus and support of teachers, which in turn will increase productivity, sustainability, joy and the overall effectiveness of our upper elementary program with the goal of closing the opportunity gap. The coach’s primary responsibility will be coaching and mentoring all grade 3-5 Lead and Resident teachers, and their co-teaching and grade level teams. They will be responsible for goal-setting, action-planning and creating systems and structures to increase consistency and alignment across 3-5 curriculum and teaching and learning practices. With support from the Director of Curriculum and Instruction (DCI), the coach will support school-wide curriculum and instruction priorities and facilitate meaningful growth and development for the teachers and students they serve.


● Bachelor's degree
● Clear California state teaching credential as issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
● Five or more years of teaching experience in upper elementary (3-5)
● Strong communicator + collaborator
● Flexible, organized + pays attention to detail
● Creative problem-solver, critical thinker, and risk taker with a growth mindset
● Able to manage multiple workstreams in a timely manner
● Strong understanding of best practices in teaching and learning
● Ability to keep children at the center and maintain a joyful attitude
● Prior coaching + mentoring experience

Coaching + Mentoring (40%)
● Build consistent coaching + mentoring practices for Resident and Lead Teachers.
● Facilitate weekly and/or bi-weekly planning, observation and debrief cycles.
● Responsible for initial goal-setting, creation,by maintenance and support of work plans and writing of midyear and end of year reviews.
● Support Grade Level Chairs with facilitation of grade level meetings and grade level goals and initiatives
● Coach + mentor co-teaching teams on effective teaming practices + co-teaching structures.
● Provide professional development to teachers.
Curriculum + Instruction (40%)
● Support development, implementation and evolution of inquiry arcs and overall lesson planning.
● Create more consistency and vertical alignment across curriculum.
● Focus on data-driven instruction and Tier 2 interventions to close opportunity gaps.
● Support DCI with pioneering grade development + school-wide curriculum and instruction priorities.
● Support Director of Student Access on school-wide SPED + inclusion priorities.
Upper Testing + Data Coordinator (20%)
● Lead team in designing an integrated Assessment Calendar including Interim Assessments.
● Support data-driven instruction and goal setting based on long term and short term data cycles, organize data to communicate with students, staff, and families.
● Serve as CAASPP Coordinator for school.
