Breakthrough OverviewBreakthrough San Francisco at SF Day School supports motivated San Francisco students on the path to college and trains outstanding college students for education careers. In 2019-20, we’re serving 242 young people in grades five – twelve, providing intensive year-round academic enrichment and support; 92% will be the first in their families to attend a four-year college. Each year, we also train 32 Teaching Fellows through our highly selective eight-week summer teaching residency, and provide a meaningful service experience to roughly 150 volunteers. For more information, please visit www.breakthroughsf.org.Position SummaryThe High School Program Assistant is a key member of Breakthrough San Francisco’s six-person administrative team during the summer. They assist with volunteer training and management, ensuring our Volunteer Leadership Program (“VLP program”) is executed effectively. They also assist with important aspects of general summer program preparation and operations. The High School Program Assistant collaborates closely with other Breakthrough staff members and reports to Breakthrough San Francisco’s Director of High School Programs.Essential FunctionsVolunteer/Intern Management
  • Assist with preparation for and implementation of VLP Orientation and professional development sessions.
  • Assist with volunteer supervision: oversee daily tasks, co-facilitate daily volunteer meetings, take note of strengths and areas for growth, hold mid-­summer check-­in conversations, and assist with end­-of-­­summer VLP program wrap­ up.
  • Document and submit VLP hours worked, absences, and disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Assist in managing Breakthrough’s after-school program, ensuring VLPs are carrying out assigned tasks and students are effectively supervised.
General Program Support
  • Assist in summer program preparation, such as updating student files and program documents and entering survey data.
  • Assist with daily program operations, such as hallway and recess supervision as well as breakfast and lunch services.
  • Assist with the implementation of major program-wide events
  • Assist with student support, holding students accountable for high standards of behavior and performance.
  • Collaborate effectively with other Breakthrough staff members.
  • Complete other projects as needed.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with first-generation college students and their families
  • Demonstrated commitment to educational equity
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and responsiveness
  • Demonstrated history of reflecting on own performance and striving for professional growth
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Prior experience with Summerbridge/Breakthrough highly desirable
  • Prior supervisory/managerial experience highly desirable
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or Cantonese a plus
Commitment and Compensation
  • Full-time, non-exempt position, beginning late May or early June 2020 and ending early August 2020, with opportunity to continue during the 2020-21 school year
  • Daily hours approximately 7:30 am - 5:30 pm
  • Compensation of at least $17.50/hour, based on experience, plus overtime
