Juneteenth is an annual holiday with 156 years of history and celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth, or June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when the last group of slaves in Galveston, TX learned they were free–over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. While Black Americans have been celebrating Juneteenth for a century and a half, it is still not taught in most schools or recognized as a national holiday.Explore ways to commemorate June 19 in the classroom with lesson plans, books, and more resources here: https://www.teachforamerica.org/celebrate-juneteenth
